Position

Heidelberg's Ziegelhausen district lies east of the center and stretches along the Neckar to Peterstal. The town got its name and coat of arms from a brickworks that was built here around 1210 by the Cistercian monastery of Schönau. The district is characterized by the idyllically located Benedictine monastery Stift Neuburg with a view of the Neckar, which the Imperial Abbey of Lorsch founded next to the Mausbach in 1130. In 1975, Ziegelhausen was incorporated into Heidelberg. Together with the neighboring Schlierbach, Ziegelhausen forms the "gateway to the Neckar Valley". Its charming landscape between the mouths of the Mausbach, Steinbach and Bärenbach, embedded in extensive forests, surrounded by orchards and lean meadows up to the heights of the Odenwald, make Ziegelhausen a popular place to live and relax. Numerous writers such as Stefan George, Hermann Hesse, Thomas Mann and Rainer Maria Rilke were also guests here. The same goes for the composers Johannes Brahms and Carl Maria von Weber, who got the inspiration for his opera “Der Freischütz” in Ziegelhausen. A varied club and cultural life, as well as the annual Kerwe and, last but not least, the “Bleelumpe” festival, contribute significantly to the special quality of life in Ziegelhausen, which is considered one of the most popular districts in Heidelberg. Ziegelhausen has three day care centers and two primary schools. It takes around 10 minutes by bus or car to get to the center, and the route along the Neckar is also idyllic by bike.
